The Best LAMS Approved Motorcycles in Tasmania for 2025

If you are thinking about getting your motorcycle licence in Tasmania, one of the first questions you will have is: what bike can I actually ride? The answer comes down to LAMS, and choosing the right one makes a huge difference to how much you enjoy your first year on the road.

What Is a LAMS Approved Motorcycle?

LAMS stands for Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme. It is the national system that determines which bikes are suitable for riders on a learner or provisional licence. To qualify, a motorcycle must have an engine no larger than 660cc and a power-to-weight ratio no higher than 150 kW per tonne.

Tasmania adopted the LAMS scheme in 2007. In practical terms, this means if you are on your L plates or your P1 licence in Tasmania, you must ride a bike from the approved LAMS list.

How Long Do You Stay on LAMS in Tasmania?

Under Tasmania's Motorcycle Graduated Licensing System (M-GLS), new riders must complete a two-day learner licence course, followed by a half-day Check Ride and a Pre-Provisional course before progressing. Most riders spend a minimum of 12 months on a LAMS bike before moving to an unrestricted licence, so it is worth choosing a bike you will genuinely enjoy riding, not just tolerate.

The Best LAMS Bikes Available at Motorworks Hobart

At Motorworks on Argyle Street, we stock a range of LAMS approved motorcycles from the brands we know and trust. Here are the standouts for 2025:

Royal Enfield (350cc to 450cc) - Best All-Rounder

Every Royal Enfield in our range is LAMS approved. From the Classic 350 to the Himalayan 450, these bikes offer genuine style, real-world comfort, and a riding experience that does not feel like a compromise. The Himalayan 450 in particular is an outstanding choice for Tasmanian roads, equally at home on the highway to Huonville or a gravel track in the Midlands.

KTM 390 Duke - Best for Urban Riders

Sharp, lightweight, and punchy enough to be genuinely fun, the KTM 390 Duke is one of the most popular learner bikes in Australia for good reason. It handles Hobart's hills and tight city streets with ease, and the build quality is exceptional for the price point.

Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 - Best for Style and Adventure

If you want a LAMS bike that looks like nothing else on the road, the Svartpilen 401 delivers. Scandinavian design, capable performance, and a rugged scrambler aesthetic make it a favourite for riders who want to stand out. LAMS compliant and genuinely exciting to ride.

Which LAMS Bike Is Right for Your Riding Style?

The right bike depends on how and where you plan to ride. A quick guide:

• Commuting around Hobart: KTM 390 Duke for its agility and easy parking

• Weekend touring and country roads: Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 for comfort and range

• Style-first riding: Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 for its distinctive look and versatility

• Classic riding experience: Royal Enfield Classic 350 for its retro look and relaxed ride

Not sure which one suits you? Come into the showroom and talk to our team. We ride these bikes ourselves and can give you honest advice based on your experience level and what you want to do on the road.
